Background of the Study
This investigation explores the role of skill acquisition programs in promoting women’s empowerment in Ekpoma Local Government Area, Edo State. Skill acquisition programs are designed to enhance women’s economic opportunities and social standing, yet their effectiveness is influenced by underlying gender dynamics (Smith, 2023). In many communities, traditional gender roles restrict women’s access to education and training, limiting their ability to participate fully in economic activities (Johnson, 2024). Recent initiatives have sought to address these gaps by providing targeted training and support. However, the sustainability of these programs remains a critical issue, particularly in terms of follow-up support and integration into the broader economy (Brown, 2025). The study examines the impact of these programs on women’s self-esteem, economic status, and community participation, integrating both qualitative feedback and quantitative performance metrics to evaluate their effectiveness (Ade, 2023).
Statement of the Problem
Despite numerous skill acquisition programs aimed at empowering women in Ekpoma, persistent gender barriers continue to limit their effectiveness. Women face challenges such as limited access to training, socio-cultural constraints, and inadequate post-training support. These issues restrict the programs’ ability to enhance women’s economic and social status. This study seeks to identify these challenges and propose measures to improve program outcomes, thereby fostering sustainable empowerment for women (Smith, 2023).
Objectives of the Study:
To evaluate the effectiveness of skill acquisition programs in empowering women.
To identify barriers that hinder successful program outcomes.
To recommend strategies for improving program sustainability and impact.
Research Questions:
How effective are current skill acquisition programs in empowering women?
What challenges do women face in accessing and benefiting from these programs?
What measures can enhance the sustainability and effectiveness of these programs?
Research Hypotheses:
H₁: Skill acquisition programs significantly improve women’s economic status.
H₂: Socio-cultural barriers hinder the full impact of empowerment programs.
H₃: Enhanced support mechanisms post-training improve program outcomes.
Significance of the Study
This investigation is crucial in determining the effectiveness of skill acquisition programs for women’s empowerment. The study’s findings will guide the development of more effective, culturally sensitive training initiatives that can significantly improve the economic and social status of women in Ekpoma (Johnson, 2024).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study focuses on skill acquisition programs in Ekpoma Local Government Area and their impact on women’s empowerment. Limitations include reliance on self-reported data and variability in program implementation.
Definitions of Terms:
Empowerment: The process of enabling individuals to gain control over economic and social decisions.
Skill Acquisition: The process of learning new abilities or techniques.
Sustainability: The ability of a program to maintain its benefits over time.
